Also what do you use to make your art? do you practically draw it pixel by pixel?

Pixel art is a fun little beast. You can technically use Windows Paint to do it, though you’d be missing some amenities.

I personally use Aseprite. It’s the first one I tried, and I’ve been very happy with it. I’ve heard fantastic things about Pyxel Edit, and GraphicsGale is another good one that’s now free!

And yes–I draw my art pixel by pixel for all intents and purposes. :) Of course, there ARE line tools, paint fill tools, etc., so I didn’t precisely place each pixel. That would be exhausting, haha. I also stick to a list of rules I have to mimic what the GameBoy Color could render (3 colors for sprites, 4 colors for tiles, etc.). While you don’t have to stick to those rules, it’s a good principle to keep a small number of colors on your palette.

If you want to get started,reddit.com/r/pixelart is a good place to post for constructive criticism. Also, that subreddit links to some fantastic resources–how to get started and a big list of tutorials.
