Ive been watching this blog for a while now ever
I’ve been watching this blog for a while now, ever since I started looking for other people who were making “GB Zelda”-esq games like me; I wanted to know if I was the only one who enjoyed the games feel and mechanics. XD Anyway, I fell in love with your blog and the development, but I was wondering if you’re self-taught in Game Maker language and if so, how did you teach yourself? I get intimidated by GM language but your blog is such a huge inspiration, I don’t want to give up! Thank you :D
Hi! Thank you for the kind words.
So there’s two parts: yes, I am self taught in GML, but I also had a foundation of computer programming before I started (once you know how programming works in general, it’s not too hard to pick up new languages!).
So learning to code for the first time can be very intimidating. It all depends on how you learn best, but my recommendation is to have a plan for a game you want to make, break that down into all the pieces you’ll need (player movement, score, inventory, whatever). Once you have an idea of the pieces you’ll need, look up tutorials on how to do that. GameMaker is pretty popular and has a lot of stuff out there!
Good luck, and happy coding!
