I ran a poll on Twitter asking if people wanted to see my WIP map of The Waking Cloak, and the overwhelming majority were very excited at the prospect!
All the disclaimers~
- I’ll keep things spoiler-free, but you will be able to see the basic layout and roughly where some locations will be.
- This is a first draft and an early work-in-progress at that. Nothing is done, nothing is set in stone, things will definitely change. :)
- It’s somewhat rectangular on purpose. I like the idea of a map and being able to explore every corner, which means every corner will be utilized!
- This (obviously) does not include dungeons, caves, interiors, etc.
- Areas are temporarily blobbed out with tiles. For example, the final forest in the game won’t be a big blob of tree tiles–it will be filled with lots of paths and secrets and places to explore.
- Tiles are not completed either!
Ok, I think you get the idea… click below to see the maps.

My first sketch! I made this a while ago and have found it very helpful for visualizing things. :) I’ve blurred out most of the labels!

I started working on the map in Tiled! I wanted to begin with the lower left section because it’s pretty contained and manageable.

Here I’ve done a lot more detail work on the bottom left island and blobbed out some very generic features. I did also add the town and the cliffs on the southwest end of the main island. The grid is just Tiled objects that are the size of the screen (320x160) so I can visualize what you guys will see and so I have a sense of scale.

Here I started adding a lot more general details: the forest in the middle, the northern mountains, and so on.

Then I decided to start making it more like my sketch. I squished up the southern sandy area and moved the swamp over, and added some other rough details.

And here it is without the regions, just for niceness! You can see there’s a LOT left to do, a lot of empty space, and the details are still very primitive. But it’s fun to show off some of my progress here, especially when I’ve been doing a bunch of behind-the-scenes work lately.
Of course as I continue to get closer to finishing the first draft, I won’t be able to show anymore! Much too spoilery. However, I am going to continue to work on this, adding details, paths, landmarks, secrets, and so on for you guys to explore. :) Building the world is easily one of my favorite tasks while making The Waking Cloak.
