Hibu the Gibu Farmer is all about old-fashioned, often indecipherable wisdom. He’s older than he looks, but manages to stay young and strong by getting up before the sun and taking care of those gibu–they won’t take care of themselves! Hibu serves as a mentor character to Tav, which, despite confusing metaphors and wacky idioms, is very welcome!

This sprite changed a lot. The old version is definitely groovin’. I think he was the most inspired by the Zelda sprites rather than Dragon Warrior sprites, so his body/feet worked a lot differently than the rest. During the overhaul there, I had to give him overalls. :) Despite the Zelda foundation, the old hat was very similar to an existing Dragon Warrior hat, so I made sure to spend a lot of time there too.

Only one question remains: what is a gibu??? Maybe you’ll get a peek sometime… :)

Two for the price of one today (since there was a ~TIE~ in the poll). Meet Poupou, the self-acclaimed magician!

Poupou purchased his turban from the Shady Merchant, and despite being repeatedly told otherwise, believes it gives him magic powers. His tricks and “herbal remedies” have been decried as lame sleight-of-hand and random shrubbery leaves, but nonetheless, Poupou persists.

This sprite was a pretty massive change as well! My brother and I couldn’t figure out how to draw a turban (”Just put more folds in it!”). I experimented with giving him dark skin in the new sprite, but the purple/brown mix was way too saturated compared to all the other sprites. I took a look at other GBC sprites with dark skin and noticed most of them have black or white clothing–no other colors. So… while I’m rethinking how to approach that (I have a handful of other darker-skinned NPCs!), it kind of helped define this guy’s character as a ridiculous “cheap fortune teller”-type.
