We’re Back! (devlog 4)
“We” in the royal sense, since it’s just me :)
What have I been up to?
NaNoWriMo went well, and I wrote over 50,000 words of a comedy/satire novel called The Inter-Dimensional Protagonist Rescue Agency. The middle was a real struggle, since I got caught in a rut of debilitating perfectionism. I kept thinking, “This won’t be good enough. I’m not good enough to be a writer,” and slowed way, way down. But near the end, I decided I’d write scenes in any order I pleased, and things got much more fun from there.
I also spent a lot of time working on a website contract for a client. It’s not complete yet, but we’re in the home stretch.
But now…
I’m working on The Waking Cloak again!!
I couldn’t be more pumped. It’s been fantastic to catch up again, to sit down and work on this passion project. I’ve been hard at work drawing with pixels and figuring out a plan for what to do next. We’ve got a mockup for #screenshotsaturday tomorrow (which you’ve already seen if you’re signed up for the newsletter), and hopefully I’ll get to do some dev streaming soon.
Also as mentioned in the newsletter:
- Investigating GameMaker Studio 2. It seems to have some really helpful features for a game like mine. The import feature works well for porting from GameMaker Studio 1, especially for a game so early in development like this one, so moving over is a major possibility.
- Will be working on fixing a bug that flings you across the room when you attempt to go to the next screen. Can’t have that…
- Will also be working on smoothing out diagonal movement.
- Looking into a chiptune tracker program called DefleMask. I’ve been using the wonderful FamiTracker, but DefleMask has a GameBoy setting, which is closer to the authenticity I’m looking for than FamiTracker’s NES abilities.
And that’s it! We’ll get back into the swing of things again soon, with more technical posts, more screenshots/mockups, and more design discussions. See you next time!
