The Waking Cloak

The one that started it all.

You find yourself stranded on a strange island. Night has taken over, monsters are out, and the inhabitants are scared. Travel between night and day to save them, aided by the worn and tattered waking cloak!

The Waking Cloak is still in active development by way of the ProtoDungeon prequel mini-series, which is helping me flesh out the engine and design.

ProtoDungeon: Episode I

You are... somewhere. You fell here. And you remember hearing voices talking about the "anchor" and the "chapel" as you fell, but you don't see anyone in the strange, ruinous castle before you.

All you know is there's an old scroll inside detailing a particular spell, and that spell allows you to switch places with various objects. Maybe you can even use it to find your way into the chapel...

ProtoDungeon is a prequel to The Waking Cloak.

ProtoDungeon: Episode II

You've found one dream orb, but the strangeness only increases, the voices only mock you further.

A ring in the graveyard has the faintest glimmer of starlight, and calling upon it pulls that light into an object before you. Can you use this new tool to find your way out of this strange place once again?

ProtoDungeon is a prequel to The Waking Cloak.

ProtoDungeon: Episode III

Escape from the Third Nightmare, using nothing but the magic item you find there beneath a shriveled lotus tree. Jump, swim, and dash to unlock your way through a seaside cove, discover what's inside the shipwreck, and maybe get closer to solving the mystery of the nightmare prison by reaching that familiar chapel...

Genogatchi

An experiment with procedurally generated creatures!

This started as a small virtual pet toy with some Monster Rancher influence, but it will likely change a lot when I come back to it. I'm thinking maybe something with a species conservation aspect? We'll see!

About

Studio Spacefarer is a one-man indie game studio in Dallas, Texas. It was created in 2019 by me (Daniel Müller!) as the home of The Waking Cloak and Genogatchi.

It all started back when my little brother was living with my wife and me. He was playing The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons on his 3DS on the couch. When I saw this, it was like a gigantic bell went off in my head, a combination of intense nostalgia and intense motivation.

I could make a game like that, I thought. I’d always wanted to, ever since I was a kid playing games on my dad’s DOS PC or my berry-pink Game Boy Color. What was stopping me, really?

Charged by Shia LaBeouf’s “JUST DO IT” video (I’m not joking), I just did it. I grabbed the most recent GameMaker Studio, since I’d used GameMaker 6-8 as a kid and was familiar with it, and began work on The Waking Cloak.

The Waking Cloak spawned a prequel miniseries, which I call my ProtoDungeons (prototype+dungeons), and a small creature raising side project called Genogatchi (generated+tamagotchi, and yes, I know I misspelled “generated”).

In the time since, my family has grown, and we have two daughters and a son now. It’ll be a while before they can help out around the “studio” (my lil desk), but they’re a constant adorable source of motivation all the same.
